Don’t let security worries spoil your Easter break

It’s Easter holiday time and many people look forward to spending time with friends and family.

A local security company has drawn up a security check list to follow before you leave.

The first step, said ADT Security’s District Manager (KwaZulu-Natal region) Ivan Govender, is to make sure your alarm system is working properly. “We advise our clients to test their alarm systems regularly so that any problems can be identified and fixed as soon as possible. This is especially important if you have done any renovations or alterations to your property recently.”

Criminals are always on the lookout for properties that appear to be unoccupied, says Govender. He suggests holidaymakers inform their neighbors of their plans to be away so that they can keep an eye out for any problems or suspicious activity. Security service providers should also be alerted so that patrollers can extra vigilant.

“High walls, electric fencing and other security measures may be practical solutions to protecting your property, but they may hinder emergency access should an incident occur. Get in touch with your security service provider about alternate access options such as lock boxes,” Govender said.

Other suggested security tips include:

1. Cut back any bushes or trees that may offer easy access over walls or gates to your property, or provide places for criminals to hide.
2. Make sure that no passive sensors installed, in your garden or anywhere along your property’s outside perimeter, are blocked by bushes or plants that might have grown to cover it.
3. Inform your neighborhood watch of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.
4. If hiring a house-sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly.
5. If you don’t have a house-sitter, ask a neighbor or a friend to turn on lights occasionally so that there is a sense that someone is around. If this is not possible, consider putting your outside lights on a timer.
6. Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home.
7. Turn off your geyser and any unnecessary electrical appliances so you can save on electricity and be environmentally friendly.

Govender said it is important that your security service provider has updated contact details for you and anyone who is looking after your property during the holidays. “It is important that the correct people can be contacted immediately in case there are any emergencies or attempted break-ins at your property.”
