R1.4 billion water project brings drought relief to Ballito/Mandeni area

The Lower Tugela Bulk Water Supply Scheme (LTBWSS,) which will begin reticulating water to Ballito, Mandeni, Ndwendwe and the surrounding areas next month, has been officially launched.

This new R1.4 billion water scheme will transfer water into the Hazelmere Dam, a source of water for more than 750 000 residents.

According to national Minister for Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane, the launch of this project has come at an ideal time when most water resources in the province are under great strain and relief will be provided to residents who will benefit from this project.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube cautioned Sundumbili residents in Mandeni who attended the launch that the implementation of this project did not take away from the fact that the province is facing a severe drought.

“The plant we launched today will supply 55 mega-litres of water a day. We must manage this resource carefully to ensure that our communities survive this drought,” said Dube-Ncube.

“The drought in the province is serious but government interventions have already had an impact. We have to date procured more than 53 motorised water tankers for various districts, we have drilled more than 150 boreholes and refurbished 85 back into operation, and we have provided emergency relief to the farming community, at a total cost of some R600-million.”
