Taxi’s across KZN are back on the roads.
SAPS KZN senior officials said the meeting between Transport MEC Willies Mchunu and taxi operators in Durban which started in the morning only ended at about 11.30pm last night.
The South African national Taxi Council (Santaco) chairperson, Boy Zondi confirmed they are going back to work this morning.
“The meeting between the MEC and taxi operators resolved that transport operations should resume,” said KZN transport spokesman, Kwanele Ncalane.
Zondi said the 210 taxis impounded during the Easter weekend will be released at a reduced fine, therefore the #TaxiStrike is over.”
However, taxis in KwaDukuza were operating as normal yesterday.
Chairperson of Dolphin Coast Association Mdu Tonny said they did not know about the strike, but if SANTACO had instructed them to stop they would have joined the strike.
On Tuesday, taxi’s blocked the N2 and R102 at the Tugela bridge protesting over the same issue.
The taxi operators have accused Transport MEC Willies Mchunu for going against his promise that no taxi would be impounded until each and every operator was issued with an operating permit.
Mchunu in a statement yesterday rejected claims made by taxi operators.
He said after a taxi strike last year, his office opened more centres in Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni and other areas to assist in addressing the backlog.
Frustrated taxi commuters were left stranded and had to make other transport arrangements to get to work.
Commuters blamed taxi operators for not alerting them about the strike.
