Petrol price hike on Wednesday

Gordhan warned the general fuel levy will be raised.

Motorists will have to dig deeper into their pockets to fork out an extra 88 cents for a litre of petrol from Wednesday (April 6) the Department of Energy said on Saturday.

Diesel increases by 95 cents and paraffin by 76 cents from midnight on Tuesday.

At the coast, petrol 95 will cost R12.39 and petrol 93 will be R12.06 and in Gauteng the petrol will cost R12.62 per litre.

This represents a huge 7.5% increase from March, while wholesale diesel will rise nearly 10%.

In his budget speech in February, Pravin Gordhan warned the general fuel levy will be raised by 30 cents/litre to R2.85/litre for petrol and R2.70/litre for diesel.

The department said the fuel price hike price could have increased by 10 cents a litre more had the Rand not strengthened against the US Dollar during the period under review which cushioned the price.
