Dolphins’ defence costs dear

The guys were distraught about their loss and are motivated to put in extra effort this week.

The Great Railroad Brewing Company Ballito Dolphins first team showed a flash of what they are capable of when they quickly dotted down two tries in the opening minutes against the Richards Bay Rugby club.

The Dolphins hosted their first game of the KZN Rugby Union Club Rugby season on their newly laid pitch at Sugar Rush on Saturday, April 2.

Anthony Fivas and Jack Severs each crossed the chalk within five minutes of kick-off and, wearing his kicking boot, Severs converted both tries. The Dolphins lead 14-0 for the first 30 minutes of the game until Richards Bay scored their first of five tries.

“Unfortunately the Dolphins allowed themselves to get sucked into their opponents’ game plan, abandoning their own strategy,” said Dolphins head coach, James Muter.

He said the two yellow cards against the Dolphins was testament to their discipline letting them down.

The first half saw Richards Bay score three tries and a penalty and the halftime whistle blew with the Dolphins trailing 14-18.

The Dolphins never managed to regain form in the second half and Richards Bay put a drop goal between the uprights and then ran in two more tries to clinch the match 31-14.

On the positive side, Muter said the team is young, skilled and willing to play.

“The guys were very distraught about their loss and are motivated to put in extra effort this week and beat the Harlequins this Saturday in Durban,” said Muter.

The seconds had a bruising encounter with Richards Bay, going down 32-7.

“We were left lamenting over a few stalwarts who were missing that could have changed the outcome,” said Dolphins director of junior rugby, Mark Svenningson.

The Dolphins’ next home game is on Saturday, April 16 and the team appreciates the expanding support from locals at home games.
