Check vehicle licence discs
If you fail to renew your licence, you will be liable to pay late licensing penalties and arrears.
Accustomed to receiving motor vehicle licence renewal notices, many vehicle drivers are happily driving around not realising their vehicle licence discs have expired.
Secretary to senior manager, Motor Transport Services, Caroline Milson said the decision to no longer send vehicle licence rene wal reminders was made at the national level.
“At provincial level we have to follow their direction. We have addressed the issue with them as many KZN vehicle owners have complained,” she said.
Many Ballito vehicle owners have also complained of not receiving their vehicle renewal licence reminders and when they do realise their vehicle licence has lapsed, there are arrears and penalties to pay.
Penalties for late payment are calculated at 1/10th of the appropriate fee for every month or part month that the licence remains unpaid according to Traffic Chief, Traffic Services, Johnny Moodley.
It must be noted that local authorities are under no legal obligation to send renewal reminders and the onus is on the vehicle owner to ensure licences are renewed timeously.
There is a 21-day grace period if you have not renewed the expired motor vehicle licence. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current licence disc.
You must renew your motor vehicle licence at your relevant registering authority or at a selected post office near you.
Moodley said if you are involved in an accident in a vehicle with a lapsed licence, there are insurance implications as well as a traffic fine and police may issue a summons.
