Food for the holidays
Summerhill House's 'Holiday feeding programme', provides one staple meal a day for 100-150 children and relies on donations.
The aroma of stews bubbling in big pots wafted around Summerhill House, in Etete, during the recent holidays, and saw the children follow their noses into the welcoming arms of the Rotaract Zimbali members.
President of Rotaract Zimbali, Kirsten Martins said they decided to sponsor the 11-day holiday feeding programme, so the children did not have to spend the holidays alone and hungry.
“During the school holidays children in this community are left at home to fend for themselves, while their parents or guardians are at work.
“These children are fed one meal a day at school during the term, but not during the holidays. When Gogo, the heart and soul of Summerhill House, got wind of this problem, she developed the ‘Holiday feeding programme’, where she feeds 100-150 children one staple meal (with massive helpings) every day,” said Martins.
She said this programme relies on donations to be able to pay for the food, which is where Rotaract came in.
