Under Rotary’s wing

The pupils shared their gratitude with the Rotary members and explained how the bursaries have changed their lives.

The Rotary Club of Zimbali recently spent an evening with 12 pupils from Nkosibomvu Secondary School, who are part of the Rotary Club of Zimbali’s Children’s Education Programme.

The three-year bursary programme was launched in October 2011 and was the brainchild of Rotarians, Birgit and Dr Hans Flender.

“Our aim is to help deserving, underprivileged students complete school. The initial fund-raising takes place in Germany, but the Rotary Club of Zimbali has also opened a special bank account in South Africa for this cause,” said Dr Flender, who lives in Ballito.

“Rotary Club Zimbali exclusively sponsors pupils, who are orphans or abandoned children or have disabled and/or unemployed parents, of public secondary schools in grade 10 – 12, who cannot financially afford to attend school any longer even though they show outstanding results.”

The pupils shared their gratitude with the Rotary members and explained how the bursaries have changed their lives.

“I do not have to go to school hungry anymore. I can focus on my school work, because I do not have to worry about my financial problems. We will go a long way with what you have given us,” said Namelani Zondi.

Samkelisiwe Khumalo said her dreams of working in media can now become a reality, thanks to this bursary.

“Everything I am wearing is through your efforts – my shoes, socks, even my panties. I am so happy to meet you and thank you for your help,” she said with a chuckle.

Phumzile Ndlovu said she wants to become a businesswoman and one day give children the same opportunity the Rotary Club of Zimbali has given them.

The Children’s Education Program also supports Belverton Secondary School in Tongaat and Groutville High School in KwaDuKuza.
