Dolphin Coast Lions Convention on the go
Lions from Multiple District 410 are meeting to elect new leadership, make decisions for its members and enjoy fellowship.
The 59th year of “Lionism” in Southern Africa celebrates its annual convention on May 6 and 7 at La Montagne and Braeside in Ballito.
Ballito Lions Club and fellow Lions from the greater Durban area have been organising the Dolphin Coast Convention the past two years and are looking forward to welcoming delegates.
Lions from Multiple District 410, which includes South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland, are meeting to elect new leadership, make decisions for its members and enjoy fellowship.
This year more than 300 like minded men and women will call Ballito their home for several days.
Events include a Gala Banquet at which a Citizen of the Year is announced. This person is selected from candidates put forward by clubs in the host district, this being KZN and the Free State.
The international guest is International Director Sanjay Khetan and his wife, Sangeeta, also a Lion, from Birganj, Nepal.
“Fellowship is an integral part of being a Lion,” said Ballito Lions Club secretary and conventional committee member, Avril Hobbs.
“Lions are groups of service-minded men and women who work together to strengthen their communities. They are also part of something bigger, a worldwide network of dedicated volunteers in more than 46000 clubs in 240 countries or geographical areas.
“Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organisation in the world. Our 1.4 million members perform valuable service all over the globe.
“Lions are friends, family and neighbours who share a core belief: community is what we make it.”
For nearly 100 years, Lions clubs have served their communities and touched the lives of millions of people.
The Centennial Service Challenge is a humanitarian initiative that brings Lions Clubs around the world together in service to celebrate the association’s 100th anniversary in 2017.
For three-and-a-half years, Lions Clubs will work to achieve the goal of serving at least 100 million people by participating in the association’s Global Service Action Campaigns, which support youth activities, vision programs, hunger initiatives, and environmental projects around the world.
The Lions Club of Ballito is involved in several projects uplifting the local communities including the popular Soap Box Derby, the Ithemba Labasha Community day where folk of all ages entertain the children, a golf day, and a ‘walk’ to raise breast cancer awareness and funds.
“In addition to our motto of “We Serve”, Lions have a saying, “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion”.
