Driefontein residents demand their comrades back

Three people have been arrested for the burning of the community hall.

The arrest of three men, for allegedly burning a Driefontein community hall during a protest in April, has angered the community .

They protested outside the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, May 3 and on Monday, May 9 saying that their “comrades” were wrongfully arrested.

“The hall was burnt by the community not three people, therefore if someone need to be arrested, all the residents must be arrested,” said a community member who asked to not to be named.

Umhali SAPS spokesperson, Vinny Pillay said the arrested residents handed themselves into the police.

“There are more people to arrest regarding this case, it is not that they are the only ones who will be arrested,” said Pillay.

The residents are complaining about the ANC candidate selection processes which they claim is being manipulated by their councillor, Mzwayi Mdluli. They do not want him or the four nominated candidates.

KwaDukuza municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu said KDM had opened a case on Monday, April 18 at Umhlali SAPS.

“I would like to state that the burning of the new community hall has been uncalled for and we would like to allow SAPS to continue with their investigation,” said Mthembu.
