Python “greets” residents at Westbook entrance
The Natal Rock Python have been a protected species for a few years now and there has been a drastic increase in their numbers.
A 3.3 metre, female Natal Rock python was found at the entrance of Westbrook last night.
Ndlondlo Reptile was called to the circle at the entrance only to find that the protected species had been run over and was dead.
Neville Wolmarans, from Ndlondlo Reptile said that there has been a drastic increase of python activity in recent years.
“The Natal Rock Python was almost extinct at one point. They have been a protected species for a few years now and there has been a drastic increase in their numbers. With the onset of winter, we do expect to see more of them as they will be looking for food.”
Wolmarans said since the beginning of the year, there have been 11 reported incidents of the rock python in the Dolphin Coast area.
Helen Bauermeister, also from Ndlondlo Reptile confirmed that unlike other snake species, the Natal Rock Python poses very little danger to people unless provoked.
“The rock python will not bite unless they are provoked and children are at a risk of being bitten. It is advised that, as with any other animal, people do not make any sudden movements or harm the snake.”
