Tongaat protesters say they will not stop

The R102 road was blocked from 6am this morning. The protests began on Tuesday, May 21.

ANC supporters from ward 69 took to the R102 and streets in Hambanathi, Tongaat yesterday to protest against the election of councilor Zanile Chili.

According to Tongaat police, the R102 road was barricaded again from 6am this morning.

Tongaat police spokesperson, Manisha Mari said, “The protesters used an old, abandoned bakkie to block the road.

“They were burning trees and stones on the road.”

She said the road was open to traffic from 9am.

The protest action has since moved into the Hambanathi township.

A Maidstone resident said they feared for their safety when the protests began.

“People were starting to get aggressive.

“There was one ANC member who had been sprayed with pepper spray.

“He ran around screaming and my wife assisted him,” said the resident.

The protesters promised they would not stop until the ANC regional leadership speaks to them about the election process.

”We want to know how a candidate with just eight votes has been elected as a councillor for ward 69.

“We do not want her. The ANC is imposing people on us.”
