Buildings torched and one man shot in volatile Durban protest

The mob in North Coast Road turned violent, shooting and stoning people.

Protesters in North Coast Road, Durban North, turned  violent and a man was shot earlier today.

According to the Northglen News a photographer was chased by the mob. He survived being pelted with stones and managed to avoid shots fired in his direction.

Another man on his way to work was also stoned and brutally beaten by the unruly crowd, and a car dealership was torched causing extensive damage to the building and vehicles housed there.

Police personnel from around the province have been called to assist.

It is believed the protesters are unhappy with the ANC candidate list that was announced.

The situation remains volatile and the SAPS has urged people to avoid the area.

Protests began early this morning and several roads have been closed causing traffic congestion in many suburbs and on entry roads into Durban.

Queen Nandi drive is now open from North Coast Road and the N2 towards KwaMashu, Newlands East/Nandi Drive and the M19 Mount Batten Drive remain closed.
