Protesters cause chaos in Durban
Several businesses have been looted and one car has been set alight in the service delivery protests on North Coast Road.
Monday morning commuters were greeted by severe traffic congestion caused by a service delivery protest in many parts of Durban.
Several roads have been closed causing traffic congestion in many suburbs and on entry roads into Durban.
Durban city has sent out a statement warning motorists to avoid the M19.
Metro Police have asked motorists, travelling towards Pinetown to turn around and go back down Umgeni Road.
Residents working outside the Durban North area heading west have been severely affected.
Protest action on North Coast Road is ongoing and police urge motorists to avoid the area.
Several businesses have been looted and one car has been set alight.
According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen the trouble started at 4am.
“The situation remains volatile. SAPS and Metro Police are on scene trying to diffuse the situation, the road remains blocked,” he said.
Inanda Road between Sea Cow Lake and the N2 is still closed to traffic.
According to Greenwood Park resident, Duane Bengston protesters are burning tyres.
“Don’t use North Coast and Mimosa Road, also North Coast and Nandi Drive is crazy. Protesters are burning stuff and throwing rocks at cars,” he said.
Inanda Road between Sea Cow Lake and the N2 is still closed to traffic.
A notice on the Traffic Information Whatsapp group warns that police have stopped traffic on Nandi Drive in both directions as protesters on the bridge are throwing stones.
People are also throwing stones back at the protesters.
An earlier report warned that the M4 was at a standstill from Umdloti and two trucks have been burnt by protesters on the R74, passed Thrings Post, towards Maphumulo.
