Greener pastures for Umhlali Country Club

Giving life to the phrase, “hard work pays off”, the Umhlali Country Club graciously accepted the award naming them the number one golf course in South Africa for “Good Governance and Environmental Control” from the John Collier annual survey, competing against 466 clubs country wide.

The focus of the John Collier annual survey is on environmental compliance, governance research, auditing and benchmarking for the golf industry.

At the prize giving ceremony held on Saturday, June 4, in keeping with World Environmental Day, John Collier said the club’s biodiversity was what had tipped the scales in their favour.

”The judges were really impressed with the work that is being done at the Umhlali Country Club. I am very happy to say to say that Umhlali pipped the other golf clubs,” said Collier.

World Environmental Day has been celebrated as an annual event on June 5 since 1973 in order to raise awareness on the importance of an healthy and green environment.

Each year, the day is based on a particular theme decided by the United Nations.

This year’s theme is “join the race to make the world a better place.” The John Collier survey on governance and environmental compliance believe the Umhlali Country Club clearly demonstrated that they have, indeed, “joined the race”.

Umhlali Country Club chairman Mike O’Donovan said the top award does not happen unless there are many committed and passionate people who embrace the benefits of good governance.

He thanked General Manager John Boyce and his staff for their hard work and dedication to maintaining the golf course standards and assured them that he has high hopes of the country club receiving the award again next year.
