New hope for Umhlali High School
But, they need to be careful not to raise expectations unnecessarily, as there is still a major spanner in the works - the land is owned by KwaDukuza municipality (KDM).
After over eight years of meetings, negotiations and more than gentle urgings, the Department of Education (DOE) has has finally given the go ahead for the highly anticipated Umhlali High School.
This is according to Ballito resident, Clare Swithenbank-Bowman and ex-PLG headmaster, Ryan Doig, who have been fighting at the forefront for the much-needed school.
“The DOE treasury has approved to build the first fee paying government high school in Ballito. A site has been identified opposite Sheffield Manor, past the Sharks board and, after a lengthy internal evaluation, DOE have agreed that the land is ideal for development and they have agreed to fully fund the project,” said Swithenbank-Bowman.
While this is all exciting news and a step in the right direction, the DOE’s Hugh Bulcock warned Clare in an email that they “need to be careful not to raise expectations unnecessarily,” as there is still a major spanner in the works – the land is owned by KwaDukuza municipality (KDM).
Swithenbank-Bowman said negotiations have started between DOE and KDM regarding the site and its transfer for educational use. KDM spokesperson, Sifiso Zulu said this matter will only be considered by Council (which is closed until August) when they have received a formal application.
“At this stage, KwaDukuza municipality cannot comment on this matter, as there has been no application made to Council for the acquisition of land. As a local authority we encourage the prospective applicant to follow the prescribed processes,” said Zulu.
Swithenbank-Bowman emphasised how important this school will be for our area and urged KDM to be mindful of its positive effects on the Dolphin Coast.
“Over 40 families a month move to Ballito and if we do not cater for the families that cannot afford private schools, people and businesses will start to move out of Ballito. We have a crisis on our hands.”
