Air Chef takes off

"The high standards of the food adds to the great experience of flying with SAA. Our food is trending" - SAA general manager, Lusanda Jiya.

Air Chefs welcomed guests from around the continent to a tasting tour of Asian, African and American flavours at their state-of-the-art new facility at the King Shaka International Airport last week.

The 1500 square meter facility boasts ultra modern kitchens including a Halaal certified kitchen, which was previously only in Johannesburg, expanding the possibilities for the catering arm of South African Airlines.

Air Chefs acting CEO, Martin Kemp said the opening of this new catering facility comes at the right time for the company.

“We are celebrating our 30th birthday this year and we are very proud to see Air Chefs launch in KZN,” said Kemp.

“We strive to be the best and have recently been rated by Top 500 as one of the top five Best Managed Catering Companies in the country. We are also the only airline catering company in the top five.”

He said the KZN facility will make about 7500 meals per day.

“We have a 99% on time performance standard and we try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, using heat plate exchangers for hot water instead of geysers and so on.”

SAA general manager, Lusanda Jiya said Air Chefs food has taken the airline to a new level.

“The high standards of the food adds to the great experience of flying with SAA. Our food is trending,” said Jiya.
