Bringing back the flow

The stream was littered with plastic, alien plants, other foreign material and had become silted which lead to it being polluted.

Sembcorp Siza water and the Dolphin Coast Conservancy “Green team” took the initiative to clean the stream behind Bhowans Bar in Shakaskraal, last Wednesday.

The clean-up was in line with their 2016 Environmental protection theme ‘conserving resources for a sustainable future’.

The stream runs alongside Sembcorp’s Shakaskraal Waste Water Treatment Works.

“It was littered with plastic, alien plants, other foreign material and had become silted. This leads to the stream being polluted and blocked and having a foul smell,” said Sembcorp Siza water managing director, Shyam Misra.

About 50 bags of waste were collected. Residents are urged to use rubbish bins in the area to avoid the stream from being polluted again.

Chairperson of the Dolphin Coast Conservancy, Di Jones said they were delighted to assist with the clearing of the stream. She said the stream was very overgrown and backed up to such an extent that regular flooding of adjoining properties occurred.

“It was rewarding to see water flowing after the hard work. Once the rains start again, the project will really show its value,” said Jones.
