A keg of dads

Dads come in a variety of types and sizes.

Whatever category you find your dad in, always respect, love and cherish him and remember that many of his little foibles which drive you crazy, you have probably inherited.

Sporty dad

In sporty dad’s house, aka the home of Nike, everyone is fit and if they are not brandishing a racquet, hockey stick or cricket bat, they are kicking or throwing a ball around.

Sporty dad is usually found on the sports field cheering on his offspring, training them or in the back garden fine-tuning their skills.

Sporty dad has maintained his youthful physique, offering welcome eye candy to bored moms watching their son’s not-so-riveting fifth team cricket match.

Games are par for the course in this household where he encourages a competitive spirit.

He likes to have lots of children to train and has hopefully married a very sporting mom who will “take” at least six pregnancies for the team.

Among all the protein shakes, vitamins, takkies, socks, sweats and sport paraphernalia, you will find sporty children.

The only time sporty dad will allow his family to relax is to watch tv, the sports channels, of course.

Accountancy dad

In complete contrast to sporty dad, accountant dad likes order so his home is neat and shiny with everything in its place, including the children.

Accountant dad keeps the house and garden shipshape and more importantly, the the household accounts.

He knows, to the last cent, the debits and credits and knows how to plan and save so his family enjoy regular holidays and treats.

An advantage of accountant dad is that he is not only a whizz at accountancy but also maths so his kids probably get really good marks in these disciplines.

Accountancy dad provides stability and security, but don’t be fooled, he often has a dry sense of humour, and when he speaks he makes cents, sorry sense.

His wife is often a jolly, loud and generous spendthrift who throws caution to the wind but, he has accepted and likes the challenge.

Accountant dad will have started your college fund way before you were even born so you can rest assured you will have a good education.

Enviro dad

Enviro dad is one of those lovable, anything goes dad who is fascinated with nature and the environment.

He will rush off to outer Mongolia to save a rare ant from going extinct, and pound the streets to save the whales, frogs, reptiles and stick insects.

Invariably, when he drives you to school you will arrive late because he will find a caterpillar spinning a cocoon, or a spider spinning a web; spot a tadpole metamophosing into a frog and stop the car, and make you watch while he films “another miracle of nature”.

His gentle and distracted nature means that every stray cat, dog, chameleon, relative or friend will simply blend into his home where you are more likely to trip over cages of recuperating animals and plants than Persian rugs.

With enviro dad you go camping a lot and have an incredible knowledge of all things outdoors.

You’ll ace Biology, but probably have to share your room with any number of creatures, human and animal.

Surfer dad

Along the coast you will find many a surfer dad because he has never left and simply can’t live anywhere else.

Surfer dad has a cool vibe. He wakes you up early to catch a wave before school and takes you back to the beach afterwards.

Surfer dad’s garage does not contain a car. (The 4×4 and trailer is parked in the driveway.)

The garage contains surf boards and wetsuits dating back to when he was a child. His life, and therefore his family’s life revolves around the sea and the surfing calendar.

He can still make his mark in the veteran category and is always stoked to give you tips to excel in the junior categories.

The whole family has bleached-from-the-sun hair, is tanned and smell of suntan oil.

If you want surfer dad to dress up for an event, he will slip on his Lizard slops, his Billabong baggies and grab a T-shirt that has seen better days but he considers ultra-valuable because it contains fond memories of an exhilarating ride, wipe-out or both.

It’s all about the experience, freedom the weather and the wave.

Entrepreneur dad

Entrepreneur dad is a go-getter.

He thinks and acts fast, and negotiates amazing deals before most people are up.

He is impatient, gets bored easily and therefore, always keeps busy. The only reason he plays golf is to network and do business.

He loves a challenge and turning things around.

He loves to entertain, is proud of his children, who must also perform well at the best schools he can afford.

His wife and children are assets he will spoil and look after.

He is a workaholic because he enjoys the buzz and adrenaline rush.

When he comes home, it is not too relax, it is to stimulate and inspire the family to achieve greater heights.

Those around him who do well will be treated with the best of everything.

He will drive the latest “it” car and have every gadget and only the latest electronic devices.

The advantage of having an entrepreneur dad is that each family member is equipped with the latest iPhone.

Entrepreneur dad is often a trailblazer, and you fall behind at your peril.
