80-year-old farm attack victim dies

The cause of Shepherd's death is suspected to have been due to heart failure.

The Upper Tongaat farmer, Simon Shepherd, who was brutally attacked in the in his home, passed away last night, in the ICU at Alberlito Hospital.

Shepherd was put into an induced coma after having difficulty breathing. The cause of Shepherd’s death is suspected to have been due to heart failure.

No funeral arrangements have been made yet.

His daughter, Lara Bellamy said that because it was still an alleged murder, there was a process that needed to be followed.

“The postmortem still needs to confirm the cause of death. Until then, we cannot make any arrangements.”

The Umhlali detective handling the case, constable Sidusiso Nkwayana confirmed that the charges against the two men arrested for the crime could be changed to murder once the postmortem was complete.

“We need to know if the injuries was a direct cause of the death. We do not know if he died from heart or respiratory failure. The charges will change only when we receive results from the postmortem,” he said.
