Promised a job, a Shaka’s Head woman was raped in Ballito

The promise of a job is often used by rapists to lure their victims to a secluded place.

In a desperate plea to get a job, many women fall victim to promises from unknown and dangerous people who promise employment.

A Shaka’s Head woman was raped for an hour in Townsend Road, Ballito at midday on Friday, August 19 when she accompanied a man, who promised her a job in Ballito.

“He apparently told her that he would go with her to meet the “so called employer” in Ballito and, convincing her of a shortcut, raped her in a bushy pathway ,” said Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay.

Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said although he knows many are truly desperate for jobs, women must be careful and trust their gut instincts.

If a person or place feels unsafe, get out of the situation.

“If someone tells you about a job, take a friend with you so that you have a fighting chance,” said Lieutenant Colonel Magudulela.

“If the person promising you a job suggests a short-cut, don’t go with him. Stay in a busy main road.

“If you feel threatened then scream and try to stop a car and ask the driver to phone the police.

“Before you go to a job interview, phone the employer to make sure the job is real, get the address yourself, and take a friend.”
