Shaka Day moves to Durban

"The KwaDukuza Recreational grounds is not big enough to host a big event like this one. Therefore, this year it will be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium."

The annual Umkhosi WeLembe (King Shaka day celebration) traditionally held at the KwaDukuza recreational grounds every year has been moved to Durban this year – disappointing local vendors who had high hopes of gaining extra income.

According to Prince Thulani Zulu this is due to the 200-year anniversary since King Shaka became king of the Zulu nation.

“The KwaDukuza Recreational grounds is not big enough to host a big event like this one. Therefore, this year it will be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium. However the event will be brought back
to KwaDukuza next year,” said Zulu.

The Zulu royal household will also celebrate the 45th anniversary of King Goodwill Zwelithini’s reign as Zulu monarch. The theme of this year’s celebrations will be “From King Shaka to King
Goodwill Zwelithini: a journey of our heritage.”

Vendors Thembelihle Mzobe from Groutville said she used to sell chips and sweets and she would go home with R500 to R600 – more than double what she normally earns in a day.

“I sell fruits and vegetables, sweets and chips on the streets and usually will go home with R200 or R150 a day. The extra money that I was going to make at the event was going to help a lot,” said
Mzobe.

Rita Langa said she believed the recreational grounds was big enough to host the event.

“Yes, the Durban venue is bigger than KwaDukuza grounds, but there was no need to move the event. There is enough space. The Durban event is being exaggerated,” said Langa.

Another vendor, Siphosakhe Mthethwa from Ntshawini, said he would go to Durban and try to sell his products there.

“As much as it will cost me, I am going there because there will be lot of people and I am sure it will be a good day for business,” said Mthethwa.

Mthethwa said last year he went home with R800 for selling chips, sweets, drinks and towels, about R600 more than his usual daily takings. He is not prepared to let that go this year.
