VIDEO: Dramatic cat rescue in Phoenix

Ballito's Specialised Rescue Unit were called assist with the difficult rescue of a mother cat and her kitten.

Bedraggled and rather sorry for themselves, but otherwise unhurt, a beloved family cat and her frightened kitten were returned to their elated owner in Phoenix last night.

The felines were saved from a drain after a four-hour rescue operation that involved digging down two metres and using angle grinders to cut through concrete piping.

“Netcare 911 called us to bring our ropes and pulleys  out to the rescue when they realised how difficult it would be to locate the cats in the intricate drainage system,” said Quentin Power of Ballito’s Specialised Rescue Unit.

But the job proved more difficult then they had thought and Rescue Tech from Kloof were also called in to join the rescue.

The cats went missing earlier that day. That afternoon their pitiful meows were heard  coming from the drains.

“We had to a specialised  camera that was put into the pipe to locate the cats,  use angle grinders to break through concrete and water to flush the cats to a point where we could access them.”

The cat and her kitten, none the worse for their ordeal, were returned to the bosom of their delighted family.
