Tucking into Bunny chows: reviews from Tongaat, Westbrook and Desainagar

Although I usually prefer my curry with rice, I often get the craving for a bunny chow which sees me exploring Tongaat to suss out the best ones.

My happy place is where there is food and where there is curry, there I am. There is nothing better than being welcomed home by the mouth-watering smell of a spicy, freshly prepared curry.

Although I usually prefer my curry with rice, I often get the craving for a bunny chow which sees me exploring Tongaat to suss out the best ones.

The team at The North Coast Courier recently joined me to taste mutton bunny chows from Westbrook, Tongaat and Desainagar. Here’s our take on what we sampled.

Cane Cutters

A small restaurant based in central Tongaat.
Taste: Everyone at the office enjoyed this bunny chow. It was a case of looks can be deceiving as the bunny chow was presented to us in a plastic packet with lunch wrap. What was inside though, was a little piece of magic that words cannot do justice to. We all thought the flavours were excellent and there was just the right amount of heat.
Smell and colour: I could taste the bunny chow before I took a bite and that’s when you know that it is good. The aroma was a perfect blend of all the flavours and the colour looked inviting. If there anything I have learnt about curry, it is that colour is usually make or break.
Overall: The meat was tender and practically falling of the bone. The potatoes were soft and and there was just the right amount of gravy. It was easy to see why Cane Cutters won the best bunny chow competition in Durban this year. Surprisingly, the price was rather modest at R45.00.

Morgan’s Bar and Grill

Recently opened. Based in Desainagar.
Taste: We loved this bunny chow although it was not that spicy. The flavours were absolutely amazing, though and it would appeal to someone who does not enjoy hot food.
Smell and colour: The aroma was captivating and immediately had our mouths watering. The appearance was a bit deceiving as it smelled spicy and the colour was a deep red. It looked as though it would be hot.
Overall: The meat was tender and there were about six pieces. I was most impressed with the bread. It was fresh and proper bunny chow bread. The price was a bit steep at R62.

Westbrook Takeaway

Based in Westbrook.
Taste: I am in love with the bunny chows from this place, mainly because it they are very spicy and the gravy is thick. It did, however send one of my colleagues running out in search of milk. The overall take on it was that it the bunny chow was tasty but too hot.
Smell and colour: Let’s just say that the aroma and colour matched the taste of the curry. It was red hot and the smell was potent.
Overall: The potatoes were very soft and the meat was tender but it would have been better if it were a tad milder. The price is R50 which is not too bad.

Danny’s House of Curries

Based in central Tongaat
Taste: Being the winner of many competitions, I would have thought that this bunny chow would have been spicier. As appetizing as it looked, the general consensus was that it was similar to a stew. A bit too bland for our liking.
Smell and colour: There was hardly an aroma but the curry did look delicious. It was a red hot colour but as we learned earlier- looks can be deceiving. Perhaps this is for a delicate palate.
Overall: There was a lot of meat and the potatoes were well cooked. The bunny chow had just enough gravy. The first thing I picked up was that the tomatoes were not properly cooked. The price was not too bad at R56.
