Revitalisation project launches in Isithebe

Earlier this year 150 businesses were affected by the violent protests in which businesses were torched and property destroyed.

After the violent protests earlier this year left the Isithebe Industrial Park in shambles, a R49 million revitalisation project is set to restore the area back to its previous state.

Isithebe is one of the ten industrial parks that government has prioritised for revitalisation.

Earlier in the year, 150 businesses were affected by the violent protests held by workers.

Businesses were badly damaged and some were torched forcing them to close their doors.

Isithebe property manager Steward Adams said the project will see infrastructure in the industrial park rebuilt and repaired.

“We appreciate the government’s contribution and it will not only have a positive affect on the industrial estate but also to the many people who lost their jobs due to the unrest,” said Adams.

The first phase of the project was launched today by Trade and Industry minister Dr Rob Davies and KZN Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC Sihle Zikalala announced the launch of the first phase of the Isithebe Industrial Park revitalisation in Mandeni on Tuesday, October 4.

“The first phase of the revitalisation includes the security infrastructure upgrade, fencing, street lighting and critical electricity requirements, but in the case of Isithebe we have upgraded the roofs of some of the factories within the industrial park,” said Davies.

According to Davies, a variety of industries operating from Isithebe contribute to the economy of the area by providing 15 000 to 20 000 jobs.

MEC Zikalala said the Isithebe Industrial Estate is one of the largest in the province and is home to many industries and factories.

“The fact that so much investment is being injected into this estate to revitalise it is not only a vote of confidence into the growth prospects of the economy of the province, but testifies to the fact that as government we have placed reindustrialisation at the apex of our list of priorities in order to grow the economy and create employment,” said Zikalala.
