Neither gale force winds nor rain could stop some of the best women golfers in South Africa from taking on Umhlali Country Club (UCC) last week.

The 80 participants in the 2016 Inter Provincial Tournament played on a very long UCC course due to conditions.

Tuesday was stroke play day for the teams in order for the various divisions to be set up for the match, with stroke play foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. The best gross winner was Yolande Duma from the Border team on a fine 73 gross.

The A division Flight 1 was won by the 2015 defending champions from Gauteng North A. This Gauteng side is extremely strong as they had the No 1,5,6,7 & 8 top ranked players on the Women’s Golf South Africa (WGSA) senior ranking.

The KwaZulu Natal Team was represented by a very young side comprising of Bronwyn Rae (captain) playing off a 6 from Mount Edgecombe as the only senior player, Brittany Fay Berger playing off a 2 from Kloof, Chloe Royston playing off a 5 from Cotswold Downs and Elsune Roode playing off a 7 from Amanzimtoti with Jean Whitfield, the Vice President of the KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Golf Association (KZNLGA) as Manager.

Unfortunately KwaZulu Natal were relegated to the B Division in 2015.

The main goal for KZNLGA of this tournament was to finish top of the B Division Flight 1 in order to go up to the A Division in 2017.

This was not meant to be as the girls fought hard, winning against Free State on Day 1 (3 1/2 to 2 1/2) – but when the crunch came on Day 2 while playing a well prepared and seasoned Southern Cape Team comprising of Sandra Winter ex Bluff and Sonia Bland, the Southern Cape beat KZNLGA (1 to 5).

However on the last Day KZNLGA came back very strongly and beat Western Province B (5 to 1).

KZNLGA finished in 3rd place by half a point from Free State.

Overall in the A division – flight 1, Gauteng A were the 2015 defending champions and they didn’t disappoint this year, winning the A Division Flight 1 convincingly.

In the A division – flight 2, Western Province A finished in first place and the runners up were Gauteng B.

Flight 1 of the B division saw Southern Cape finish in first place with Free State the runners up.

While in flight 2 of the B division Mpumulanga took first place with Eastern Province being the runners up.
