Ballito’s water valve shut off ‘in error’

"This shut pertains to preparation of pipework at the Avondale reservoir to accept water from Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme."

Large parts of Ballito were left without water this morning amid swirling rumours that it was a shutdown scheduled to last up to 12 hours.

Fortunately this wasn’t the case and water supply to the area was turned back on shortly before 11am.

Shami Harichunder, Corporate Stakeholder Manager for Umgeni Water told The Courier that a planned shutdown was underway at Ballito’s Avondale reservoir and that all shut-down planning protocols were followed by Sembcorp Siza.

“This shutdown pertains to preparation of pipework at the Avondale reservoir to accept water from Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme.”

According to Harichunder this shutdown does not affect residents of greater Ballito area.

“This morning Umgeni Water staff shut off a valve in error and some residents were inconvenienced for a short period. This was rectified timeously and Ballito residents are receiving water with the exception of consumers in Bogmore Estate,” he explained.

“At this stage Umgeni Water is on course with the shutdown and it is expected to be completed before the end of the day. It must be emphasised that Sembcorp Siza Water (SSW) is aware of the planned shutdown and that consumers must direct all reticulation-related questions via SSW’s call centre.”

Sembcorp Siza Water can be contacted on 032 946 2700.
