Three alleged ATM fraudsters arrested in KwaDukuza

Police found a number of ATM cards from different banks which they took from the suspects.

KwaDukuza detectives arrested three suspects aged between 30 and 40 for fraud at KwaDukuza today at about 6.45am.

Detectives were conducting an operation at Kwadukuza Central Business District due to high incidents of cards swapping at the Capitec ATM.

“During the operation they saw a suspicious white Toyota double-cab and two men loitering at the ATM,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

“When the police approached the two men jumped into the vehicle and speed off.

“Police gave chase and the men were caught opposite the Shaka monument in KwaDukuza. They found a number of ATM cards from different banks which they took from the suspects.”

Zwane said the suspects have been positively linked with other cases of fraud in other areas.

A case of fraud was opened at KwaDukuza police station and the arrested suspects will appear at KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on  Monday, 17 October.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa applauded the KwaDukuza detectives for their vigilance that led to the arrest of the suspects.

“I also warn the credit card holders to keep their cards and secret pins in a safe place. They must take extra precautions when they are using their cards at any ATM machines. Do not be distracted by any stranger who offers to help you at an ATM machine.

“Remember to report  your card to the bank if it has been swallowed by machine as criminals use any tricks in getting your cards,” Langa said.

The arrest of the three men follows a warning from Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay that many cases of card cloning are taking place in shopping centres in and around Ballito.

Pillay said that while withdrawing money from ATMs people were being distracted by two men. “One will start a conversation while the other will swap the card that is inserted into the machine with another one,” he said.
