VIDEO: Red Jeep pounded by waves at Casuarina Beach

No one has come forward to claim the vehicle.

The owner of the red Jeep abandoned in the surf at Casuarina Beach in front of Beach Bums on Sunday has apparently not come forward to claim his vehicle.

Quentin Power of Specialised Rescue Unit who had a team on standby at the beach, told The Courier on Monday that nobody had claimed the car.

“At the moment it’s an ownerless Jeep,” said Power.

“No-one wants to come forward and take responsibility for it.”

The breaking waves smashed the vehicle’s passenger side window, eventually breaking over the roof before it was rescued from the sea.

The Jeep apparently suffered severe electrical damage as a result of the salt water.

It was towed off the beach with locked wheels by a tractor.

Durban resident Kirsty Charlton was sitting on the beach when the drama unfolded in front of her.

She quickly whipped out her phone to record the action.

The Jeep – illegally driven onto the beach, was abandoned at around 11am after becoming stuck in the sand and was finally towed off the beach shortly after 3pm.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Jeep was not only illegally driven onto the beach, but that the driver was playing “chicken” with the waves when the vehicle became stuck in the sand.

This is not the first time a driver has attempted to drive on water on the Dolphin Coast.
In 2014 a Suzuki Jimny drove into the surf between Salt Rock and Chakas Rock beach.
