Telkom thieves get away with electronics worth R200 000
"We suspect that it was an inside job, as the stolen goods had just been delivered," Vinny Pillay.
A group of armed men forced their way into the Ballito Lifestyle Centre and broke into the Telkom store in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The six men arrived in two cars at about 12.45am, driving through the chains across the entrance to the centre near the Nandos.
A security guard who was approached by the men reportedly fled after realising that two of them were armed and one was carrying a crowbar.
According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay the men broke into the store through the front door.
“So far we know that one laptop and 22 cellphones have been stolen amounting to a total of R200 000. We suspect that it was an inside job, as the stolen goods had just been delivered,” said Pillay.
When the alarm was triggered, they fled on foot via the exit at Beira Alta.
Telkom management are still working out how much damage was done and will review the footage for further investigation.
