Ten given the gift of sight at Alberlito Hospital

Ten lucky people can see the world more clearly after receiving free cataract surgery at Alberlito Hospital last week, as part of eye-awareness month.

In cataract surgery, the lens inside the eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens to restore clear vision

“Everything is clear now,” said Patience Ntiyantiya from Glenhills after the surgery.

Ntiyantiya, who has been struggling with her eyes for eight years in public hospitals, told The Courier she was sincerely grateful to Dr Carey and all involved.

“I cannot wait to see my daughter Winnie and my grandson Nelson again,” said Ntiyantiya.

Hester Bekker (73) from Umdloti said she could not express her gratitude enough.

“God bless the doctors for doing this for me – this is wonderful work they are doing.”

These surgeries were made possible by the support of Alberlito Hospital and Alcon Pharmaceuticals and the time offered up by Dr Malcolm Carey and Dr Matt Gunning.

Another of the patients, 65-year-old Thembanie Mtembu received surgery on her left eye, saying she was very thankful and “that more services like this should be provided to those living in rural areas.”

Dr Carey said that opportunities to give back to those who are less fortunate were one of the best parts of being a doctor.

“I only wish we could do pro-bono surgeries of this nature more often as there are so many people living with cataracts who cannot afford to have the surgery that would allow them to see the world in all its beauty.”
