Prisoner escapes Umhlali court

The police are out in force searching for the man who was due to face the court on charges of rape and robbery.

A Shaka’s Head man charged with rape and robbery escaped from the Umhlali Court this morning.

According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson warrant officer Vinny Pillay the 25-year-old man ran out of court after his case was postponed to December.

“He pushed a police officer in court and ran across the police station and into the nearby sugar cane field. Police are searching for him,” said Pillay.

Pillay said the man is short with dreadlocks, dark in completion and overweight.

“Thirty police vehicles are out in search of him, including the Umhlali K9 unit and Durban dog unit,” said Pillay.

If you see the escapee do not approach him and contact the police on 032-9479900.
