Umdloti crane collapse leaves one critical

The cause of the accident is still to be confirmed

A construction worker has been left in critical condition after a tower crane collapsed at a building site near Sibaya Casino this morning (Monday).

According to Reaction Unit SA, the crane operator and several others escaped unharmed.

“At approximately 9.50am members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to a construction site after several employees reported a collapsed crane with fatalities and entrapments.

“Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene and the RUSA Helicopter lifted off with paramedics on board.

Upon arrival, officers found several emergency services on scene, however there were no fatalities or entrapments.

“One construction worker who fell several floors and struck the crane bars several times suffered serious injuries and was stabilized.”

The crane driver, who was descending from the operators seat at the time of the collapse was not injured.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the injured man was taken to Umhlanga Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the accident is still to be confirmed.
