Tongaat restaurant to compete in Coca-Cola cook-off
The restaurant, famous for their mouth watering breyani and bunny chows, is gearing up for first prize
Owners Sally and Devan Maistry said the idea of opening a restaurant came after they figured that Sally’s mom, Dolly Pillay’s, cooking was too good to not share.

“We first opened 18 years ago at Arbee Drive in Tongaat and we later moved to a store below the Shoprite Center complex.
“We took the runner-up award in the 2006 Coco-Cola bunny chow competition in the vegetarian category and in 2007, we won the award for the best store. We have won one other bunny chow competitions prior to that.”
“For this competition, our customers had to vote for us via SMS. We would like to thank everyone who voted and recommended us.”
Sally said their secret to a great curry was simple – lots of love and a passion for good food.
“Many people have asked my mother for the recipe for her curries and even when she does give it to them, they tell us that it still does not taste the same. She clearly has the magic touch. ”

The store is open six days a week and aside from their bunny chows, Tan’s has become popular for their daily breyani options, served with dhal, salad, and soji.
The cook-off competition promises to offer great food and entertainment for the entire family and will host regional finalists from the Eastern Cape and KZN.
Semi-finalists will be selected according to three categories defined as ‘on the go’ meals which can be eaten off the premises, ‘traditional’ plated meals eaten while seated at the premises, and speciality ‘gourmet’ dishes.
Tan’s Fast Food will be competing against 14 other outlets.
In addition to sampling delicious dishes, visitors to the competition will also have a choice of food stalls.
Expect nine hours of family entertainment from 10 am onwards with Babes Wodumo, talented local performers, celebrity chef Zola Nene, DJ CNDO and comedian Celeste Ntuli all performing on the day.
Young visitors will be entertained in a special Kiddie Zone.
Tickets to the semi-final events are available from Computicket at R100 per person. A 50% discount applies for pensioners and entry for children under 12 is free.
A second semi-final will be hosted in Johannesburg on Saturday, September 2, for entrants from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, Northern Cape and North West provinces.
