New centre and road will open up Salt Rock

Theo van As, the estate manager of Mt Richmore, told The Courier this development was all part of their vision for the future of the estate as well as the surrounding area

A new commercial hub is in the works for Mt Richmore Estate and it is going to be home to more than a new Checkers supermarket.

Theo van As, estate manager of Mt Richmore, told The Courier this development was all part of their vision for the future of the estate and the surrounding area.

The new 9 300 square metre centre, set to open next March, will include a Checkers, Woolworths Food and a Clicks as its anchor stores as well as two restaurants, a clothing store and a Checkers Liquor.

“As part of the development of the estate we are also building a public road that will run from Mt Richmore’s entrance off Salt Rock Road through to Simbithi, bringing us closer to Ballito, Chaka’s Rock and Salt Rock and making the new centre more convenient for everyone,” said Van As.

The new centre currently under construction in Mt. Richmore Estate.

The purpose of the centre was not to get into a tug-of-war with other centres for customers, but to meet the needs of the community of the ever growing ‘new Salt Rock’.

“Over the next 10 years we will have up to 2 200 homes in the estate. At an average of four people in each house that gives us between eight and nine thousand people who will be living here.”

RVN Properties’ Richter van Niekerk, the hiring agent for the development, said plans for the future of the estate included this centre, as well as a boulevard, hospital/medical centre and of course the existing Curro school.

They are also looking at the possibility of building a gym and a hardware store in the next phase of development.

Van Niekerk added that companies like Checkers and Woolworths would not have come on board if they did not think this centre would meet a need in the community.

“The Salt Rock and Sheffield community has been waiting for a long time for this prime piece of land to be developed,” said van Niekerk.
