Summerhill House a home for hope
Summerhill House opened an all new home and sports facilities last week
Giving hope and a sense of purpose to orphaned and at risk children is a mission wholeheartedly embraced by Summerhill House in Etete.
Summerhill House is a children’s home for orphaned and displaced children which aims to give them a home, a sense of family a safe space to be children.
Founded ten years ago by Paula Owen with the help of like-minded spirit and Etete local Esther Lynn, Summerhill House opened an all new home and sports facilities last week.
The new home, donated by the Victor Daitz Foundation, is designed to house six children and one house mother, mirroring a family unit as closely as possible. The foundation further donated astro-turfed sports facilities.
“What I love about this project is that it is not ‘institutional,’ it is like a real home,” said the foundation’s Brian Moshal.
Lynn was so overwhelmed by the opening of the new house that she dissolved into tears of gratitude.
“It has taken ten years and we still have a long way to go, thank you for helping us get this far,” she said.
There are two arms to Summerhill House. One is the community on their doorstep that are in effect neighbours.
The second is their core vision of establishing and running foster cluster care for orphans and abandoned children.
Currently they offer a homework programme for children in their immediate area and have three children in their full time care.
“The addition of the Victor Daitz house will allow Summerhill House in Etete to provide for even more disadvantaged children,” said Owen.
Summerhill House is always looking for financial assistance for the sustainability of their homes and development programs, as well as sponsorships of holiday feeding, netball posts, volunteers, landscaping and plant material and more.
