Expel the Guptas, Dr Mathews Phosa tells iLembe Chamber breakfast
While addressing the chamber, Dr Phosa said the president was dragging all of SA through the mud in his bid to delay the state capture investigation.
Presidential hopeful Dr Mathews Phosa has called for the expulsion of the Gupta family as a first step towards healing an economically-damaged South Africa.
“The Gupta family, and their willing minions in the Presidency and elsewhere, have soiled and destroyed the legacy of the once proud ANC.”
Dr Phosa was the guest speaker at a iLembe Chamber of Commerce business breakfast held at Simbithi Estate this morning (Wednesday), in partnership with The North Coast Courier and the Robert Group.
Pulling no punches in his assessment of the job the president is doing, he said to applause: “We have, as a leader, a fat, selfish president who lives in luxury while a multitude of South Africans do not know where their next meal will come from.”

Dr Phosa stressed the damage being done to the country by incompetent political leadership, economic instability in the country, lack-lustre education and the unsavory relationship between government and corrupt business.
“We need to revive the rainbow spirit and work through this period of animosity. We are one people, with one country and one flag – we need one another, black and white.”
Dr Phosa identified a few key areas where South Africa needs to make drastic changes, including: treating education as a national key strategic project, redefining the country’s economic strategy to incentivise the private sector and investors, to fast-track public works programmes, redesign government agencies such as Eskom, Transnet and SAA and to appoint an independent commission to speedily investigate all forms of public sector corruption.

He said the president’s most important partnership was not with the people of South Africa, but with dubious characters such as the Guptas who “side stepped the law to become ‘South African citizens’.”
“There is a simple solution to all of this,” said Dr Phosa, “Revoke the citizenship of the Saxonworld family and ensure in the process that they never return.”
Dr Phosa accepted the nomination to run for ANC president earlier this year. The other two likely front-runner are the president’s erstwhile wife Nkosazana-Dlamini Zuma and current deputy president and Cyril Ramaphosa.
