Shaka’s Head mum taking state to court

A Shaka’s Head mum is holding her breath as the case of her baby’s arm that was amputated at Stanger Hospital will be going to Pietermaritzburg High Court in June.

This was said by the mother, Phindile Mpanza who is being helped by an Umhlanga attorney to claim for medical negligence.

Mpanza’s baby, Kuyakhanya’s arm was amputated after a drip was inserted at Stanger Hospital last year February.

She gave birth by caesarean section and both mother and child were kept in hospital for a week because Kuyakhanya’s blood sugar was low.

“A drip was inserted into his arm. After couple of days, I realised that the baby’s arm was becoming cold, swollen and it was turning purple.”

She reported the problem to a nurse but she was told she must wait for a doctor.

The child was distressed and clearly in pain but nothing was done to alleviate the problem. Eventually, the drip was removed on the 13th but the baby’s condition did not improve. At 1am on the 14th, mother and baby were transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital but it was already too late to save Kuyakhanya’s arm.

After the story was published in The North Coast Courier, she received a call from PG Naidoo and Associates Incorporated who apparently promised to help her to claim from the state.

“We recently went to a doctor for a check up and to check if he can get a prosthetic arm,” said Mpanza.

Kuyakhanya is growing up fast and receives physiotherapy and aquatic therapy at Stanger Hospital every month.
