Ploughing back into the community
Kwaphenduka runs the development side of the popular Footy programme which has soccer teams throughout the rural areas of KwaDukuza.
Paying it forward can be a full time job when giving back to rural communities.
Fortunately, Nathan Wit from Kwaphenduka Projects, a registered NPO, is more than up to the challenge.
Kwaphenduka runs the development side of the popular Footy programme which has soccer teams throughout the rural areas of KwaDukuza.
However, development does not end on the sports field.
“We run an English literacy programme for grade three and four learners were we visit the schools,” Wit said.
“We also have a maths programme for grade eight to eleven learners in Mandeni and an IT project for both learners and teachers, which has already been implemented in 60 schools.”
He said this IT project was made possible through donations from African Bank and the Department of Education.

The non profit was founded six years ago and has grown from strength to strength, helping children across KZN and even into Gauteng.
“This is my day job,” said Wit with a laugh.
“It is a full time thing but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
He said he has always wanted to work in a field where he could give back to South Africa, especially for underprivileged kids.

“It is so special to see a child start reading for the very first time, or to see a teacher who has never used a computer before now using Google to look for lesson material.”
Wit said they were always keen for support and donations from the community, but what they were really looking for are corporate partners who wish to get involved in making the future brighter for the children of KZN.
