Alarming twist to ‘rock throwing’ on M4
The Ballito man believes his car was targeted by criminals
A 66-year-old Ballito man is traumatised after his car was hit by an “unknown object” that was thrown across the M4, near La Mercy yesterday afternoon.
“I was driving alone from the Umdloti bridge near La Mercy, toward Ballito at around 2pm yesterday. An object, that looked like a plastic drum with wire around it, was thrown into the air from the opposite end of the road.
“It landed right in front of my car and hit the number plate and the front grill,” said Mike Knowles.
Knowles said he pulled over a few meters away, along with another motorist who saw what had happened and stopped to offer assistance.

“The road was fairly quiet at the time which seemed perfect for a hijacking scenario. I went back to the place the object was thrown and it seemed that it had been removed from the road.

“This is frightening because criminals are using different tactics and motorists do not know where they are safe.
“They are not just throwing things from bridges but from the side of the road where it is easier for them to escape. What is worse is that the M4 has so many bushes where these criminals can hide.”
The Ballito resident said he was not interested in opening a case at the police station as he felt that police were not doing anything to prevent more incidents from happening.
