Did you hear the loud bang last night?

Earth tremor or blasting? Residents left boggled after "loud explosion" heard on the Dolphin Coast.

Parts of the North Coast had an unexpected start to the evening yesterday (Friday) after residents between Salt Rock and Westbrook reported what they thought was an earth tremor.

Shortly after 6pm, multiple people posted on the Dolphin Coast Neighbours Favebook group querying the loud noise, with some residents saying it felt like an explosion.

Others thought it could have come from a local quarry.

Desiree Howard commented, “Wow. More widespread than I thought. Must have been some kind of tremor. Our house shook and windows rattled and I thought a house near us had exploded!!”

Ashleigh Smit-Gates said, “Also heard in Dunkirk with a bit of vibration. So strange!!”

On Tuesday last week, the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services noted multiple reports of an earth tremor experienced in the southern and western parts of Johannesburg.

This was the second earth tremor to be experienced in most parts of the Johannesburg since the beginning of this year, with the last one experienced on the evening of 23 January.

In April last year a 5.2 magnitude tremor hit the Gauteng province, with a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake striking a remote region of Botswana later in the day.

This resulted in a number of tremors felt around the country, including the Dolphin Coast.

Attempts to contact the Council for Geoscience were unsuccessful. An update will be published once we receive further information.
