UPDATE: Sashni fights on in ICU

After a week in an induced coma, Sashni Daniel’s eyes are open and she is using them as her only way to communicate with her family.

More than a month after she was hit by a brick during a Shaka’s Head electricity protest, the 27-year-old jewellery consultant continues to fight for her life.

Her father, Kovi Daniel, said Sashni was still in ICU at Albert Luthuli hospital after the emergency operation to relieve pressure on her brain two weeks ago.

“Sashni was in a coma for a week after she came out of surgery. She is still critical but she is no longer on a ventilator which is a good sign. She has a tube in her throat (tracheotomy) to help her breathe. She is also being fed via a tube. Her eyes are open and she has been trying to communicate with us using her eyes.”

Kovi said he was grateful that his only daughter has prayer and support from many people who read about the tragedy. He believes that Sashni will pull through.

“A miracle happened before when she had an incredible and sudden turnaround. She was talking and even laughing.

“Although her condition has since deteriorated, she is a fighter and a miracle will happen again,” he said.

The night Sashni was injured the North Coast township’s residents had taken to the streets after they were left without electricity for 11 hours.

KwaDukuza municipality had cut employee overtime, prohibiting electricians to work over weekends.

The issue of overtime has since been resolved during a meeting between the electricians, their unions and municipal manager in which KDM agreed to hire more electricians.
