Car plunges over Maidstone bridge
A man was lucky to escape with only fractures after his car went off a bridge on the R102 last night.
Paramedics and fire crews had to rappel down from a bridge to rescue a man trapped in his car last night.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, at around 7pm last night (Sunday) a man lost control of his car on the wet road as he was going over the R102 Maidstone bridge.

“Paramedics and rescue crews were lowered down off the bridge onto the riverbed below using high angle rescue systems,” Herbst said.
“While paramedics worked together with Tongaat Fire Department to stabilise the trapped patient, rescue crews topside established an advanced hoisting system.”
Once stabilised, the man – in his early thirties – was lifted up onto the bridge to a waiting ambulance before being rushed to hospital.
Herbst said the man had suffered multiple fractures.
