Loret’s heart-filled food for the soul
"A client once said they could taste the love in my food - that is what it is about."
Bubbling with energy she dashes from pot to pot releasing steaming clouds of mouth watering aromas stirring here and adding some herbs there.
Meet Loret Theunissen De Musso, the energetic lady behind Loret’s Kitchen opposite Umhlali Preparatory School.
“People stop and pop in to smell what I’m cooking all the time and I love it.
“This is an extension of my home, so come kuier in my kitchen,” said de Musso, who does everything from catering and ready made meals to cooking classes.
Her food journey started 31 years ago, when she entered the popular Rooi Rose Toptienerkok competition at the age of 16 in her hometown, Tzaneen.
“I always enjoyed baking and making in the kitchen and decided to enter this national competition. The whole town got involved to help me prep the menu and get sponsors.
“I remember the day I sat in the school canteen with a mouth full of peas when the principal announced that I made it into the finals. I was beside myself!”
She was one of top eight finalists in the country and from that moment on, it was clear that cooking was her path. She went to hotel school, did her catering diploma and has cooked ever since.
“Cooking and entertainment is in my blood. It is a hard job, don’t get me wrong, but if you have the passion and the gift, use it.
“I want to get people excited about food,” said the single mom of two – Isabella (12) and Jian-Luca (9) – who moved to Ballito two years ago.
Her foodie skills have taken her on weird and wonderful journeys – be it cooking for the Proteas to making a pumpkin pie for Oprah.
The secret to her success is that she cooks from the heart.
“I love the old school, slow way of cooking.
“You need to enjoy it, pour yourself a glass of wine, use fresh ingredients and have fun.
“Do not just rush through a meal because you have to feed everyone.
“A client once said they could taste the love in my food – that is what it is about.”
