It is believed that one of the cars was traveling on the north bound lane when the driver lost control of his vehicle before the road construction, coming across the center median and colliding head on with two other vehicles.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, six people suffered injuries ranging for serious to moderate.
One of the fatalities was still trapped in the wreckage and needed to be removed from the vehicle using the jaws of life.
The second fatality was ejected from another car.
Rush hour traffic was backed up for almost two hours, with traffic being diverted onto the R102.
The road is now open.
