Captain Vinny Pillay streaks ahead of the pack
Pillay was originally one of 4000 nominees and has since made it to the final five civil servants from across SA competing for the award.
Community hero and local top cop, captain Vinny Pillay has taken an early lead in the 2018 SA Integrity Idol competition.
Integrity Idol is a global campaign to recognise and reward honest and outstanding government officials.
Pillay was originally one of 4000 nominees and has since made it to the final five civil servants from across SA competing for the award.
As of Tuesday morning, he had a solid lead over the other finalists, with 58% of the online vote, however the sms votes have not been tallied at all so the cat is not quite in the bag.
Pillay, who has been a policeman since 1993, told the Courier he believed integrity boiled down to honesty on a daily basis and in everything you do.
Whether it be chasing down criminals, coordinating investigations, liaising with the media, going on patrols, talking with victims’ families, giving wheelchairs to disabled children or working – on his own time – to erect a trauma center at the station, nothing is too much trouble for Pillay.
“The team spirit in the station and between security companies and the help and support from the community keeps me going.”
As part of the Integrity Idols campaign, a moving inspirational video was made about captain Vinny, where filmmakers followed him through the community to get a taste for his job at the grassroots level.
