Good care comes from the heart
Professor Andre van Niekerk said nurses should always touch the heart of their patients.
Nurses at Netcare Alberlito hospital were reminded that patients depend on them for much-needed comfort, care and kindness in what is often a stressful time in their lives.
Speaking at a Nurses’ Day celebration at the hospital on Friday, professor Andre van Niekerk said nurses should always touch the heart of their patients.
“Yes, they should always give professional help but of almost greater importance is the way it is delivered.
“Nurses must earn their patient’s trust because people may not remember what led them to be in the hospital bed, but they will remember the kindness they received while staying here,” said van Niekerk.

Besides the encouraging words from van Niekerk, the nurses also shared the importance of what the day meant to them.
Most said it was a reminder to take pride in their profession.
“By taking pride in what we do we ensure that our work is as clean as our white outfit,” said staff nurse Bongiwe Gumede, who has worked in the ICU for the past eight years.
