WATCH: Imbonini Road covered in shattered glass by angry workers

The road was almost completely covered in shattered glass this morning.

Members of the Transport Action Retail and General Workers Union (THOR) reportedly protested outside Imbonini Park on the Shakas Head road last night.

According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay, the protesters were demanding higher salaries from Boxer Superstores and other companies.

Members of the Fire Department were cleaning glass from the road early this morning (Thursday).

Early morning warnings urged motorists to avoid the area after protesters blocked the road with bricks and broken glass, however the protesters have since been dispersed and the road is now open.

Motorists are still advised to choose an alternate route though, as cleanup operations are ongoing to clear the glass from the road.

WATCH: Journalist Allan Troskie was live at the scene of the protest as cleanup operations were underway.
