Three dead including baby in Tongaat N2 accident

Tragedy struck as a taxi accident led to the deaths of three church-goers early this morning, one of them a baby.

Early this morning (Monday) a fully loaded taxi careened off an embankment alongside the N2, leading to the loss of three lives.

One of the victims was reportedly a four-month-old baby.

Multiple emergency services rushed to the accident where two people had died on impact.

One of the critically injured then succumbed to their injuries despite the efforts of rescue crews.

IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst said the taxi, a 16-seater Quantum, was fully loaded and returning from a church event when the driver lost control of the vehicle just before 5am, veered off the road and down a steep embankment just north of the Tongaat Toll Plaza.

“The taxi went off the embankment plus-minus 50 meters and rolled multiple times,” said Herbst.

The three deceased, including the baby, were declared dead at the site of the accident.

Ten more passengers were injured, three of them critically, and were taken to hospital for further care.
