Murder spurs Nkobongo protesters to demand drug dealer’s arrest

The roads in Nkobongo remain closed.

Nkonbongo protesters barricaded the roads in the Shakaskraal township this morning, demanding the arrest of a notorious drug dealer who they believe is behind the murder of a local man.

From as early as 5am, about 40 residents called on Umhlali SAPS to immediately arrest the dealer who they say has been wreaking havoc in the community by selling drugs to the youth and “mercilessly killing innocent people”.

Umhlali spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay said the dealer has been accused of shooting and killing a man last week and was also being investigated in another murder case.

Pillay said the motive behind last week’s shooting was still not known and that although police had information that indicated the man the community had accused may be a dealer, there was no evidence against him to lead to an arrest.

“The man is believed to be behind the dealings of whoonga and other drugs in Shakaskraal but whenever we search him, he never has anything on him because he is believed to have runners.

Pillay said the roads in Nkobongo remain closed.
